What is cellulose sponge?

Cellulose sponges are made from biodegradable wood pulp. The extraction of the wood pulp from the trees is done by means of a physicochemical process.

In order to improve the strength and service life of the sponge, the white cotton-like fluffy fibers obtained by crushing the wood pulp meal through the crusher, referred to as reinforcing fibers, are similarly soluble, have a good affinity with recycled wood fibers, and when mixed with reinforcing fibers, sponge products get better tensile strength and life.

Learn more about the basics of Cellulose Sponge

In order to use cellulose sponge for your application, you need to know more about the basics of cellulose sponge, such as what it is made of, common uses and precautions, etc.

Why cellulose sponges are biodegradable?

The main reason why cellulose sponge is biodegradable is because of its formulation and raw materials. As the two most important raw materials of cellulose sponge, organic wood pulp fiber and cotton are 100% biodegradable and have been grown and used by humans for thousands of years. Unlike traditional polyurethane, polyether, and other cleaning supplies, By burying it in the soil, cellulose sponge could be fully biodegraded in about 120 days.

Cellulose sponges were invented to replace industrial cleaning products because they’re biodegradable. In today’s cleaning world, cellulose sponges are a game-changer. The use of green cleaning products is on the rise, and cellulose sponges are the top choice.

Additionally, cellulose sponge is a proven composting and floriculture sponge material, This is also an indication of its superior degradability.

Learn more about the Benefits of Cellulose Sponge

Cellulose sponge’s excellent physical properties have made it one of the most environmentally friendly and cost effective cleaning supplies for decades. Read the following article to learn more about the application areas.

how cellulose sponges are made

The main raw material for cellulose sponges is wood pulp meal. It is made into biodegradable lignocellulosic sponge products after soaking, pressing, yellowing, gluing, blending, foam forming and washing processes.

There are 6 steps in the detailed manufacturing:

(a) Soaking process: Add sodium hydroxide and wood pulp meal together in the impregnation drum.

(b) Pressing: soaking wood pulp in liquid alkali, then pressing it to get alkali cellulose blocks.

(c) Yellowing: Crushing the resting alkali cellulose block into granules or small pieces, then passing a lot of carbon disulfide gas through it.

(d) Mucilage process: adding said xanthate to the kneader and mixing it with wood pulp meal, bamboo pulp meal, and water.

(e) Mixing process: where the mucilage is combined with sodium sulfate crystals and color powder ribbons and heated until foamy.

(f) foaming process: sponge mixture into sponge blocks.

All cellulose sponge raw sheets have been made, and they’re being processed by sponge factories around the world into various forms of finished products for sale or use.
